Welcome to the Child Development Program at TCC!

The Childhood Development (CHD) Program at Tidewater Community College prepares students to offer high-quality early care and education services for children from birth through age 12, with emphasis on birth through age 5.

Our faculty is dedicated to creating a learning community that respects the diversity of students, teaches to the learning style of individual students, and assists students to develop the knowledge and skills required of Early Childhood professionals.

Our Mission: To prepare students to provide the highest possible standard of care and education, reflecting research-based, best practices in diverse, inclusive programs serving children and families.

Graduates are employed in variety of child care and early education settings such as Head Start and public, private, for-profit, non-profit, faith-based, and military child care programs.

Many students also prepare to work as paraprofessionals within the public school system, while others enroll in courses to upgrade skills or renew teaching certificates.

Students are served at all four TCC campuses.  A Child Development Lab school is located on the Virginia Beach Campus. Our curriculum will integrate with licensed child care being offered on all campuses starting in 2014, in partnership with the YWCA of South Hampton Roads. Click here to learn more.
