New York Times LRC@TCC

On March 28, 2011, the New York Times stopped providing unlimited free access to the paper from the web site. They have instituted a ‘paywall’ that allows only limited access for free. Below is some information about the paywall and about the access available through the library databases:

• From the web site you can view 20 articles per month before you are blocked or asked to pay.
• Home subscribers to the print newspaper get unlimited online access, but institutional subscribers (like TCC) do not.
• All front page content is available.
• Access is available to an additional 5 articles per day if found through major search engines.
• Unlimited access is available to articles found through blogs and social networks (like Facebook).

Library Databases:

• Best for someone who wants to read today’s paper: Click on the News Pages tab. The New York Times is the second paper listed.
• Full text available through the search page from 1980-present (today’s paper).

EBSCO Newspaper Source Plus:
• Full text available from 1985 to present (generally to yesterday’s paper).
• Can find articles using on a topic through the search page.
• Can browse the publication by date.

Lexis/Nexis Academic:
• Full text available through the search page from 1980-present (today’s paper).

ProQuest Digital Microfilm:
• Provides a pdf copy of the paper (looks just like the newspaper).
• Cannot search by topic; must call up the paper by date.
• Information is added a month at a time and generally lags about 2-3 months.
• As the name suggests, this is like using the microfilm.

Other: NY Times articles are also found in Science In Context and Opposing Viewpoints in Context.

If the patron is searching for a topic, please refer them to a librarian for assistance with searching these databases.
