Lighthouse Design

Topic: Lighthouse
Name: "Cape TCC Lighthouse"
Modeled After: Cape Hatteras Lighthouse, including:
Diagonal stripping
Octagonal base
Railed platform
Diagonal stripping
Octagonal base
Railed platform
Fresnel lens
Cone-shaped roof
Lighthouse keeper's house nearby
Sand and water landscaping

Interactive Elements:
Rotating lighthouse light (operated by a switch)
Fog horn (operated by a switch)
Lighthouse quiz - a series of 16 questions on Virginia and North Carolina lighthouses with electronically displayed answers

Other design considerations:
Impressive height desired
A 10' by 10' floor space with 20' ceiling was available
The final lighhouse was about 13' tall

Structural integrity critical
The lighthouse was solid rather than hollow
A 12' carpet tube was used in the center of the lighthouse to be sure that the lighthouse was vertical
Cardboard was used between each layer of cans (with a hole that fit around the carpet tube)
Rubber bands were used to bind the outer circle of cans together on each layer
A "practice build" was held on Saturday, November 7, in order to verify the design, cut cardboard, determine how to generate the proper striping on the lighthouse, test the light and lens assembly, etc.
