TCC Engineering Club
CANstruction
CANstruction is a design/build competition organized to raise food that
is then contributed to food banks. In the year 2000, 45 cities participated
in CANstruction. Hampton Roads has participated since 1996 and the
TCC Engineering Club has competed in this event since 1997.
The competition is sponsored by the Society of Design Administration, the
American Institute of Architects, and the Joint engineering societies of
Hampton Roads.
Engineering firms and groups compete in CANstruction to build structures
according to the following basic rules:
- only prepackaged cans and food items may be used
- the structure must be self-supporting
- only cardboard or foamboard (for leveling), rubber bands, and tape
may be used
- the cans/boxes cannot be harmed and their labels must remain intact
and not be covered
- the structure must be built in a 10' x 10' x 10' area
- the teams will have 7 hours to build their structures. No pre-assembly
is allowed.
- only five team members at a time are allowed to build
The following awards are given:
Sponsoring location's award (such as the Children's
Museum Award)
Best Structural Design
Best Use of Labels
Best Meal
Juror's Favorite
Honorable Mention
