Introduction

| A
focus group representing the Mathematics Developmental and Academic
areas traveled to universities in Texas from June 20 - 25 to conduct
research on state-of-the-art mathematics programs and facilities
and to observe programs and services of the wider campus community.
Consisting of Stan Barto, Marilyn Peacock, Al Pearce, and Mary
Jane Naismith, the group visited the University of Houston, North
Harris Community College in Houston and the University of Texas
located in Austin. |

Visit Objectives
|
- To
investigate the optimal requirements for facilities, pedagogy,
and faculty training in the teaching of Developmental Mathematics
using Learning Equation software.
- To
observe state-of-the-art instructional facilities and technologies
used in teaching on the college level.
- To
meet with mathematics instructors and others who are engaged
in mathematics software development and other instructional
aids development.
- To
meet with mathematics instructors who have developed and are
teaching unique courses.
- To
observe the design and lay-out of an entire community college
campus, noting especially the Student Services area, location
of computer labs, and faculty office areas.
