Welcome to the English Department at Tidewater Community College.

Since the advent of TCC, our writing instructors have provided the community with the skills in written communication essential to education and business. English composition courses improve all aspects of education, and students with a background in advanced writing courses are best prepared to secure employment and to advance in the job world.

Recognizing that many students know the material for their college classes but are not able to communicate that knowledge effectively, English faculty at TCC offer instruction in all aspects of written communication, helping ensure that everyone understands the fundamentals.

We welcome your involvement in all our programs. Several of our students have returned to TCC to teach English, either part time or full time. The rest have moved on to other colleges and the business arena more confident in their abilities to communicate. The English department at TCC is a great place to start writing!

• Basic writing classes build a strong foundation for success in curricular composition classes: ENG 01-03.
• College composition courses offer development and structural skills necessary for college writing assignments: ENG 111-112.
• Advanced composition and technical writing focus students’ writing skills toward research, diction, and specific, specialized subjects and audiences.
• Creative writing courses offer unique, original approaches to writing that are beneficial in liberal arts programs and in the competitive business market as well as in the development of students’ personal pursuits.
• TCC offers several writing courses over the Internet, providing students the flexibility to learn away from campus and still maintain contact with one of the largest, most accessible English departments in the Commonwealth: TCC Online Learning.
• Support for writers at every stage of the writing process is available: Writing Center, Grammar Hotline, and English Computer Center.
