Background
The Global Learning Committee at TCC began in the early 1980’s as the International Education Task Force and achieved full committee status as the International Education Committee in 1999 as one of the college’s six governance committees. In 2007 the IEC membership voted to change the name of the committee to reflect the changing vision of the organization.
Purpose/Mission
TCC holds global learning to be an essential element of undergraduate education that prepares students for the realities of a culturally diverse, technologically engaged, economically interdependent, and ecologically vulnerable world.
The purpose of the GLC is to (1) infuse global learning across the college curriculum, (2) internationalize the college culture, (3) promote overseas study and service opportunities for students, and (4) to expand global learning opportunities for faculty.
Our mission is to cultivate an academic culture of global citizenship in which teaching and learning reflect a commitment to examining, understanding, and engaging the world from multiple cultural perspectives.
Reporting Structure & Charge
Each year the Global Learning Committee is formally charged by the Vice President for Academic and Student Services. The charge for 2009-10 includes:
- Review the end of year report for the 2008-09 academic year to note past actions and identify unfinished projects or initiatives that will continue into the 2009-10 academic year.
- Secure approval/support from the appropriate governance bodies and constituencies on a final strategic planning document for globalizing TCC's culture with a focus on curriculum and global citizenship.
- Through the work of a subcommittee collaborating with the Coordinator of International Programs, review preliminary work and continue developing the Title VIa grant application for submission when the U.S. Department of Education issues the Request for Proposals.
- In collaboration with other governance committees and the newly-formed collegewide International Student Alliance, engage in activities, including (but not limited to) International Education Week, that globalize the curriculum and broaden students' awareness of global citizenship.
- Realign the Academic Integrity Plan for Study Abroad with the responsibilities of the newly charged Curriculum and Instruction Committees.
Incentive Program: Our Global Perspective Needs Yours
In an effort to increase participation and attendance, as well as reward active committee members for terrific service, the GLC piloted in 2008-09 the "Our Global Perspective Needs Yours" program. If the committee is to do its job effectively, we need to do ours as members and show up for meetings and participate outside them. A team-based point incentive system was built around everything we do on the GLC. The winning team for 2008-09 was Mike Bryan, Sarah Greene, and Azam Tabrizi. The 2009-10 teams are:
BLUE: Mike Bryan, Azam Tabrizi, Jai Stofocik, and Peter Shaw
GREEN: Emily Hartman, Gabriela Toletti, and Jerome (or other student rep)
ORANGE: Dan Strasser, Carol Hodges, and Linda Jensen
YELLOW: Ken Spencer, Danielle Giscombe, and Fran Jacobson
Global Conversation Circle
The Global Conversation Circle initiative was developed by the International Awareness subcommittee for the purpose of raising awareness and engaging the TCC community on global issues. This learning community, initially in the form of a book club, represents an effective way to appreciate other perspectives - not only through the books themselves but also through perspectives of those with different backgrounds.
