FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQ)

If your question isn't answered below, use the form at the bottom to submit a question.

Where is licensed child care available at TCC?

The TCC Child Development Center-Portsmouth Campus is fully licensed and operational.  The Norfolk and Virginia beach locations anticipate full licensure before the start of classes for the Fall 2014 semester.  The Chesapeake location anticipate being fully licensed in September 2014.

What happened to the child-minding program?

TCC made the decision to move to licensed day-care to offer students more peace of mind while they are working or in class and to provide children a richer educational experience. Our partner, the YWCA of South Hampton Roads, is a well-known and respected provider of child care in the region.

How many slots will be available?

The number of slots will vary based on the number of children in full-time or part-time care.

If I don’t register early, will I be put on a waiting list?

Yes. When registration re-opens, you will be contacted.

If my child doesn’t get a slot, will my registration fee be refunded?

The registration fee is not refundable; however, the registration fee holds your child’s spot on the waiting list.

Do I have to take classes on the campus to use the TCC Child Development Center-at that campus?

No. You just need to be a currently enrolled TCC student at any campus or location.

Can my child receive care only while I’m in class?

Your child can receive care whether you’re in class or at work.

Who else can take advantage of these child care services?

TCC students have the first priority. After that, the centers are open to current TCC employees, currently contracted TCC vendors, and members of the general public, in that order.

Do I retain my child’s slot as long as I remain enrolled at TCC as a student?

Yes.

Do I retain my spot if I become employed at TCC?

If you stop being a student and become an employee, your status will be that of a TCC employee, and you will have priority after enrolled students, including those on waiting lists.

Can I continue services if I’m not a student, employee, or contracted vendor?

Yes, but your priority status will be that of the general public.

If I no longer need child care, how much notice must I give?

A minimum of two weeks’ notice is required.

Will you offer care for sick children?

The Child Development Centers will follow the Virginia Department of Social Services policy (VAC 40-185-490) in regards to the care of sick children. Please consult the center's staff prior to bringing a sick child.

How do I use my student financial aid for child care services?

You must complete the Authorization to Pay Child Care Charges from Financial Aid Sources, with signatures from a YWCA representative, and turn it in to any campus Business Office

Download Authorization to Pay Child Care Charges from Financial Aid Sources (PDF)

Will the TCC Child Development Centers accept other Social Services child care funding?

Yes. Consult the appropriate social services agency.

If I can’t place my child into the TCC Child Development Center are there alternatives?

Yes, please consult the Women’s Center on any campus for resources and information about accessing local child care.
