New Students
Connect with our staff for additional support.
Explore the different ways to connect with TCC to learn about our academic programs, visit the campus, and complete your steps to enroll.
Complete our interest form.
Step 1 – Apply to TCC
Complete the free online application for admission.
- Read all the application questions carefully and do your best to respond to everything accurately.
- Skipping a response or giving an incomplete answer (i.e. not providing your social security number or failing to indicate that you plan to apply for financial aid) will create additional steps for you later.
- To qualify for general admission, you must have a high school diploma or the equivalent, or be 18 years of age or older and be able to benefit from a program of study at Tidewater Community College.
After you submit your application, attend a Next Steps to Enroll session for assistance.
It’s important to select an academic program of study to be eligible for financial aid and graduation. Please complete this form if you did not select a program on your application or to change your program. If you are unsure of your program, select Associate of Science – General Studies.
Step 2 – Apply for Financial Aid
To optimize funding options, you should complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). You can find step-by-step instructions on how to apply here.
Once you submit your FAFSA, be sure to monitor your MyTCC account for To Do items needed to process your financial aid. Your To Do items are found in the Message Center in SIS.
Step 3 – Login to your account
Log in to myTCC to check for any holds on your account.
- Click the SIS icon
- Your holds will be listed in the Action Items & Messages panel.
- Follow the instructions shown on the screen to have the hold removed from your file. If you have questions, contact the department listed on the screen for more information.
- Refer to your acceptance email you received after applying for your student number, username, and instructions for accessing your account. If you have trouble accessing your account, please contact us at 757.822.1111 or at info@tcc.edu.
- Refer to your acceptance email to review your in-state or out of state domicile status. Your domicile status determines your tuition rate. For more information on how to be eligible for in-state tuition, click here.
Step 4 – Determine College Readiness
If you are a high school graduate, complete the following questionnaire before attending an advising session. This questionnaire helps determine which English and math courses you are ready for. Click this Log in to complete the questionnaire.
If you earned a GED within 5 years with a score of 165 or above on the Reasoning through Language section and a 155 or above on the GED Math section, submit a copy of your GED Scores when you meet with an advisor.
If you earned a GED more than 5 years ago or your score was less than 165, you will take the Virginia Placement Test. Connect with our Testing Center to schedule this test at 757.822.2194 or testing@tcc.edu.
If you have taken classes at another college and would like to have these credits reviewed for transfer to TCC, please send your transcripts to TCC, then submit a Request for Transfer Evaluation form. If you have not completed a college level English and math course with a grade of C or higher, please also complete the placement questionnaire.
If English is your second language, please take the English as a Second Language (ESL) Placement Test. If you completed 9th – 12th grade coursework (4 years) in a U.S. high school and awarded a high school diploma, placement can be reviewed by submitting your transcript to advising@tcc.edu.
