Selected Resources from the Web:
AmphiaWeb offers ready access
to taxonomic information for recognized species of amphibian in the
world. Species accounts are being added regularly by specialists and
volunteers and they contain species descriptions, life history information,
conservation status, literature references, photos and range maps for
many species.
Animal
Diversity Web is an online database of animal natural
history, distribution, classification, and conservation biology
at the University of Michigan. Thousands of species accounts may
include
text, pictures of living animals,
photographs and movies
of specimens, and/or recordings of sounds. Students write the text
of these accounts and ADW cannot guarantee their accuracy.
Descriptions of levels of organization above the species level, especially
phyla, classes, and in some cases, orders and families.
BiologyBrowser produced by Thomson Scientific, is a free web site offering resources for the life sciences information community featuring dictionaries, an animal thesaurus, and a glossary for taxonomy.
WildFinder is
a map-driven, searchable database of more than 30,000 species worldwide,
with a powerful search tool that allows users to discover where species
live or explore wild places to find out what species live there.
BIODIDAC is a database of over 5,000 line drawings, photographs, videos, and
animations for biology.
PubMed
Central is
the U.S. National Library of Medicine's digital archive of life sciences
journal literature. Access to the full text of articles in PMC is free,
except where a journal requires a subscription for access to recent
articles.
PLoS Biology is
an open-access, peer-reviewed general biology journal published monthly,
online and in print, by the Public Library of Science (PLoS).
Biology
Online: Information in the Biological Sciences A searchable
collection of tutorials on various subjects of biology, links,
and an online
dictionary.
Scirus is a search engine for scientific information only.
