THE DINING ROOM
OPENING IN CHESAPEAKE AND NORFOLK
March 19-23, 28, 29, 2003
This Off Broadway comedy was first performed in 1982 and enjoyed a comfortable
run off 552 performances before expanding to audiences in regional professional
theatres from Portland, ME to Tucson, AZ to San Diego, CA. Now Tidewater Community
College is bringing it to Hampton Roads.
The setting is a dining room, viewed as a disappearing phenomenon of WASP
family life. Writer A.R. Gurney cleverly constructed this work as a series
of events with characters of all ages, flowing in and out with each event
and actor a different part of personal or family crises. The play is poignant
and funny, alternately and in combination.
A character appearing now as a grandfather discussing his grandson's future
later appears in another segment as a child at a birthday party. The complexities
of The Dining Room are well defined in this sometimes tart, sometimes sweet,
always generously served work.
Directed by local actor and TCC instructor, Lisa Neely, the all-TCC student
production can be enjoyed in two cities. The
