May 1 launch of a new truck-driving opportunity

SOUTH HAMPTON ROADS, Va. – (April 19, 2006) – Tidewater Community College’s Truck Driving Training program announces a new student opportunity in an inaugural partnership with local concrete producer Titan Virginia Ready-Mix, a subsidiary of Titan America.

This spring, Titan contacted TCC - one of only two community colleges in the state that offers truck-driving licensure through its program - to discuss training opportunities. With TCC’s program, the Department of Motor Vehicles comes to campus and tests the students for licensure upon successful completion of the 7-week course.

In its partnership with TCC - launching with the May 1 class - Titan will interview interested students halfway through the course and offer employment to selected students. They will earn more than $12 an hour while still in class and for time each day also working at Titan.

Titan will donate a ready-mix truck to TCC that will give students hands-on experience for Class B certification.

“We’re very excited to partner with TCC in this new venture,” says Kenya Manning, human resource manager, Titan Virginia Ready-Mix. “The market dictates that we use different resources to combat the ongoing driver shortage, and we believe this new avenue for certification and licensing is a win/win for Titan and for those seeking high-paying jobs in the Tidewater area.”

TCC’s truck-driving training will add Class B licensure to its established Class A program to further prepare drivers for Titan and other firms. TCC this year expanded training to include an 8-week evening session, helping address a dire shortage of drivers. Enrollment grew 114 percent from fall 2004 to fall 2005. Tuition for the program is $1,215.

“We’re pleased to be able to work with Titan in this unique effort,” says Ann Ambrose, dean of business, public services and technologies, TCC’s Portsmouth Campus.
