VIRGINIA DELEGATE TERRIE SUIT ADDRESSED TCC GRADUATES
TCC welcomed thousands to May 11 commencement
Commencement Address
HAMPTON ROADS, Va. - (May 12, 2007) - Virginia Delegate Terrie Suit delivered the commencement speech at Tidewater Community College’s 44th graduation exercises on Friday, May 11, at the Ted Constant Convocation Center, Norfolk. Approximately 1,000 students received associate degrees, certificates or diplomas at the ceremony.
Delegate Suit serves on the General Laws, the Counties, Cities and Towns, and the Commerce and Labor committees. During the legislative session she chairs the Housing sub-committee of General Laws and when out of session she chairs the policy-developing Virginia Housing Commission. Elected to the Virginia House of Delegates on Nov. 2, 1999, Suit represents the 81st district, which includes the southeast portion of Virginia Beach and the portion of Chesapeake south of Great Bridge.
Suit’s work on issues important to her district and the Commonwealth include eminent domain reform, affordable housing, military relations, retention of Oceana Naval Air Station, protections for victims of domestic violence, and environmental remediation. Her awards and recognitions include Virginians Against Domestic Violence: 2002 Catalyst Peace Award, YWCA’s Woman of Distinction Award 2004, 2005 Hampton Roads Outstanding Professional Woman in Public Service Award, and one of 25 Housing Leaders in 2006 named by the Virginia Housing Commission.
A board member of the Virginia Beach Contemporary Art Center Board of Trustees and the Old Dominion University Alumni Association, Suit is also chair and long-standing member of the Lead Hampton Roads Board of Trustees.
Suit, a Navy wife, is a member of the Navy League of the United States and grew up the daughter of a career U.S. Army officer. She and her husband, Tom, reside in the Blackwater area of the district. An example of lifelong learning, she recently graduated from TCC and has just earned her bachelor’s degree from Old Dominion University.
