TCC TO BE PART OF APPRENTICESHIP EXPO AT SCOPE
Workforce event will be held on May 23

HAMPTON ROADS, Va. (May 14, 2013) – Tidewater Community College will participate in “SCOPE YOUR FUTURE,” a registered apprenticeship expo on May 23 at Norfolk Scope.

The expo, a series of events focusing on workforce training and employers who provide apprenticeship opportunities, will be hosted by the City of Norfolk, Virginia Department of Labor and Industry, and the Virginia Tidewater Consortium for Higher Education, comprising 13 institutions including TCC.

The expo is free and open to the public.

The general public workshops will be held from 9 a.m. until noon. During that time, TCC’s Work Readiness Assistance Program will present a session on resume writing, and staff from TCC’s Regional Workforce Development Center will offer information on the Virginia Career Readiness Certificate, a portable “work readiness” credential that confirms to employers that job seekers possess basic workplace skills.

Additional morning sessions will include information on financial aid, dressing for success, earning a GED and mock interviews with the Virginia Employment Commission.

The afternoon/evening expo beginning at 4 p.m. will feature more than 75 employers who are potentially hiring for apprenticeships in fields ranging from shipbuilding and repair to construction and skilled trades to services and education. The expo concludes at 8 p.m.

Registration is optional; however, registered participants receive information and tips to assist in their job search and skill building. Participants are requested to dress professionally and bring resumes. Register at NorfolkDevelopment.com by clicking on the “SCOPE YOUR FUTURE” link.

For information on workshop content and speakers, contact Sarah Parker at Sarah.Parker@norfolk.gov or call 757-664-4338.
