BIOGRAPHY

Brigadier General Katherine P. Kasun, U.S. Army
Commandant, Joint Forces Staff College

Brigadier General Katherine “Kate” Kasun assumed the duties as Commandant, Joint Forces Staff College, Norfolk, VA on 15 September 2008. She was previously the Deputy Commanding General of the U.S. Army Intelligence and Security Command.

Born in San Jose, CA, and raised in the mountains of North Carolina, BG Kasun attended Western Carolina University in Cullowhee, NC, graduating in 1979 with a BS in Criminal Justice and Law Enforcement and commissioned a second lieutenant in the Military Intelligence Corps. In 2003, she received a Masters in Strategic Studies from the U.S. Army War College in Carlisle, PA.

Following the basic military intelligence and counterintelligence officer courses, BG Kasun was stationed in Ansbach, Germany with the 1st Armored Division with a follow-on assignment to VII Corps in Stuttgart, GE. In 1982, she returned to the states and joined the Army Reserves. She was stationed at numerous posts throughout the United States, to include Fort Benning, GA, Presidio of San Francisco, CA, Fort Devens, MA, Fort Totten, NY, and Fort Bragg, NC. During her 29 years of service, she has served in many positions, to include: counterintelligence officer, adjutant, Division Secretary to the General Staff, intelligence analyst, and division training officer, to name a few.

BG Kasun was activated for five years directly after 9/11. Her battalion, the 325th Military Intelligence Battalion from East Windsor, CT, was the first Army Reserve battalion mobilized in direct support of Operation Noble Eagle, where they supported the 525 Military Intelligence Brigade, XVIII Airborne Corps, Fort Bragg, NC for a year. Her follow-on mobilization was at the 77th Regional Readiness Command, Fort Totten, NY as the Deputy Chief of Staff for Training, G7. She recently concluded a three-year active duty tour with the United States Joint Forces Command in Norfolk, VA, where she served as the Joint Capabilities Integration Development System (JCIDS) Chief, then the Deputy Director for Integration with the J8, and a Senior Joint Doctrine Development Officer with the J7, Joint Warfighting Center.

BG Kasun served in Baghdad, Iraq, in 2005 and Kabul, Afghanistan in 2006 as a team chief and Military Intelligence collections analyst for the Joint Forces Command, Joint Center for Operational Analysis.

Her awards include the Meritorious Service Medal (three Oak Leaf Clusters), Joint Meritorious Service Medal (two Oak Leaf Clusters), Army Commendation Medal (two Oak Leaf Clusters), and the Army Achievement Medal.
