WORDS OF WISDOM LECTURE SERIES
Enrique Morones, Cornel West and Beverly Macy
HAMPTON ROADS, Va. (Sept. 12, 2011) – Three renowned speakers will address diverse topics at Tidewater Community College this year in a new lecture series, Words of Wisdom. The speakers are Enrique Morones, Cornel West and Beverly Macy. Presented by TCC’s Student Government Association and student activities, all talks are free and open to the public.
Enrique Morones speaks on Wednesday, Sept. 21, at 10 a.m. in the Forum, Building A, Portsmouth Campus. A native of San Diego, Morones holds dual citizenship with the United States and Mexico. He founded Border Angels, an all-volunteer group that places survival items such as water, food and sleeping bags along Mexican migrant routes. Recognized as one of the 100 most influential Latinos in the U.S. by Hispanic Business Magazine, Morones has been featured on major American and Mexican television networks where he tirelessly promotes Latino and migrant rights.
Cornel West addresses the TCC community on Wednesday, Oct. 26, at 7 p.m. at the TCC Roper Performing Arts Center on the Norfolk Campus. One of America’s most provocative intellectuals, West is a professor at Princeton University’s Center for African American Studies. The author of 19 books, including Race Matters, which has sold over half a million copies, West frequently appears on the Bill Maher Show, Colbert Report, Tavis Smiley Show and CNN. West has also appeared in over 25 documentaries and has made three spoken word albums including Never Forget, in collaboration with Prince and Jill Scott.
An expert on social media, Beverly Macy will discuss its growing use by businesses the world over. Her talk at the Portsmouth Campus is set for Wednesday, Nov. 9, at 12:30 p.m. in the Forum, Building A. As chief executive officer of Gravity Summit, Macy presents social media marketing conferences across the nation. Drawing on 14 years of experience with Xerox Corp., as well as her recent experience advising clients like Toyota, Walt Disney and Boeing, Macy offers audiences a current analysis on social media’s critical impact. Macy is a regular contributor to The Huffington Post, where she examines global marketing and branding.
