What is the FAFSA?
The Free Application for Federal Student Aid collects information about your financial circumstances to determine eligibility for federal aid programs. When you complete the FAFSA, you’ll be considered for federal grants, work-study jobs and loans.
When should you submit your FAFSA?
Starting in 2016, you can submit your FAFSA October 1 using prior-prior year data. In other words, if you are applying for financial aid for fall 2017, you can use your 2015 tax information.
April 1 of each year is TCC's priority deadline for filing your FAFSA.
TCC continually processes financial aid from April 1 through the end of the financial aid year. If you miss the April 1 deadline you may still apply for aid. June 30 is the deadline each year to file the FAFSA for that aid year.
After the FAFSA comes the SAR
Once you complete the FAFSA, you will receive your Student Aid Report (SAR). This document is a summary of the information you provided on your FAFSA. The SAR will provide you with information about any issues related to your FAFSA and list the Expected Family Contribution (EFC) that determines your eligibility for different aid sources.
When will you receive your SAR?
If you filed your FAFSA online and provided an email address, you will receive your SAR within five business days at your email address. By mail, it may take up to two weeks to receive the report. Once you receive your SAR, Tidewater Community College will contact you if additional information is needed.
Once your financial file is completed, you will receive a Financial Aid Award Notice at your TCC student email address.
