ATTENDANCE IS MANDATORY AT TCC!!

Class attendance and participation are

essential to student success!

Regular and punctual attendance is expected at Tidewater Community College.

  • Students should be present and on time for all scheduled class and laboratory meetings.
  • Instructors do not have to admit students who arrive late to class.
  • Online classes may document attendance by participation in class activities and/or completion of assignments.
  • Student attendance will be recorded from the first day of class.
  • Students who have not attended a traditional class or not participated in an online class may be deleted from the course before the date to drop with a tuition refund.
  • If students add a class or register after the first day of classes, they are counted absent from all class meetings missed.

When absences in a course equal the number of weekly class sessions of that course, the students' standing in that class may be in jeopardy.

If students are absent more than 15% of scheduled instructional time, attendance may be defined as unsatisfactory. This calculation includes absences occurring during the add/drop period.

Instructors may establish a more stringent attendance policy, and students are responsible for understanding the attendance requirements for each course in which they are enrolled.

You may be withdrawn from class due to absences

Students who have either stopped attending a traditional class or ceased participating in an online class my be withdrawn from the course.

When instructors determine that students' absences constitute unsatisfactory attendance, the students may be withdrawn from the course. The students will receive a grade of W during the first 60% of a course.

If the students are withdrawn after 60% of the class, a grade of F (or U in the case of a developmental course) will be assigned unless the students can document mitigating circumstances.

Students who are withdrawn from a class because of unsatisfactory attendance are not eligible for a refund of tuition or fees.

Students who stop attending class for any reason should officially withdraw from the class and contact the instructor. Failure to withdraw may result in a failing grade for the course.

What to do if you have to miss class

Students should notify their instructors in advance if possible when they will miss classes due to illness, and students should make arrangements to make up any missed work. If unable to contact their instructors, students should notify the respective campus dean of student services who will inform the students' instructors.

Although students may be allowed some absences in each semester, students should be advised not to use these except for emergencies.

Students are responsible for contacting their instructors immediately upon their return to school and are responsible for making up all work missed.

Instructors will judge whether students will be permitted to make up work and will decide on the time and nature of the makeup work. Communication between students and instructors is most important, and it is the responsibility of the students to initiate such communication.
