College-Wide Scholarships @ TCC

 

  • The TCC Scholarship Application and Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) can be picked up from the campus Financial Aid Office, or fill out a FAFSA online using TCC College Code 003712 at http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/
  • Information regarding the approximate monetary value of each scholarship can be obtained from the Financial Aid Office after May 1.
  • The priority application deadline for scholarships, unless otherwise noted, is April 1 prior to the award year.
  • To ensure your application for scholarship is complete, please register during Priority Registration.
  • Application may be accepted after April 1st or until all scholarship funds are awarded.
  • A thank you letter must be submitted by each student who receives a scholarship award unless otherwise noted.  Submit your thank you letter here.

Barnes and Noble Textbook Scholarship

Description:

This scholarship was established by Barnes and Noble College Booksellers to support the education of TCC students.  Scholarship funds should be applied to textbooks only.

Criteria:

• Student must be enrolled in a degree or certificate program.

• Student can be a full-time or part-time student.

• Student must have not yet met the cost of attendance for the year.

• If a continuing student at TCC, student must have an overall GPA of 2.5.

• If a new student at TCC, student must have a high school GPA of 2.8.

Chris R. Marcia Veterans Tribute Scholarship

Description:

The College-wide Scholarship was established by Chris R. Marcia.  Mr. Marcia served in the U.S. Marine Corps.  After his service in the Marines, he attended Tidewater Community College (TCC) and went on to graduate from the University of Virginia.  Mr. Marcia believes that the scholarships he received at TCC helped him to achieve his academic goals, and he is establishing this scholarship to help afford other veterans the same opportunities given to him.  Scholarship funds should be used for tuition, fees, and books.

Criteria:

•  Student can be a full-time or part-time student currently enrolled at TCC

  Student must demonstrate financial need

  Student must demonstrate academic merit through a GPA of 3.2 or higher. In the 

case of no eligible applicants, a GPA of 3.0 will be considered.

  Student must have an honorable discharge from the military (DD214)

  Student must have served at least 3-years of active duty in the military (DD214)

  Student must submit a short essay (no more than 250 words) on:

  • His or her defining moment in the military
  • How the military experience will shape his or her future career goals

Coca-Cola Enterprises Scholarship

Description:

Coca-Cola Enterprises, Inc. established this scholarship in 2009 to support scholarships for TCC students.  The funds can be used for tuition, fees, and books.

Criteria:

• Student must be enrolled in a degree or certificate program at Tidewater Community College.

• Student can be a full-time or part-time student.

• Student must have not yet met the total cost of attendance for the year.

• Student must have a minimum overall GPA of 2.5.

• Student must submit a brief paragraph describing his or her educational and career goals and how this scholarship will assist him or her in achieving those goals.

College-Wide General Scholarship

Description:

The College-wide General Scholarship was established through donations to the Tidewater Community College Educational Foundation.  Scholarship funds should be used for tuition, fees, and books.

Criteria:

• Must be currently enrolled at TCC in a degree or certificate program

Continuing student (minimum of 6 completed credits)
• Cumulative GPA of 2.5

Funds to be equally awarded in two semesters

Amount of scholarship award per student not to exceed tuition, fees, and/or books

Letter of recommendation is required with application from one of the following:

  TCC faculty member, faculty from another institution, or employer.

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Scholarship

Description:

The Tidewater Community College Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Scholarship is awarded annually to one Tidewater Community College student. The scholarship is in the amount of $3,382 and can only be used at Tidewater Community College.   The scholarship will be disbursed in two equal payments at the beginning of the fall and spring semesters. 

Criteria:

  Be a currently enrolled student at Tidewater Community College

   Must be enrolled full-time Fall 2009 and Spring 2010

•  Have at least one semester remaining prior to graduation from TCC

•  Be in good academic standing with a GPA of 2.5 or higher

•  Have completed at least 12 credits at TCC

   Must attend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Recognition Program

•  Provide documented evidence of community service or service learning experiences (continuous committed service in the community) on company letterhead.

•  Submit a completed application by the due date.  Application deadline December 1, 2010.

E. C. Wareheim Scholarship

Description:

This scholarship was esatablished in 1994 by the E. C. Wareheim Foundation, which distributes funds to support efforts that promote the independence and personal achievement of individuals. The scholarship funds should be applied to tuition, fees, and books.

Criteria:

• Financial need
• Full-time or part-time student
• New or continuing student
• GPA of 3.0 or higher
• Enrolled in a degree, certificate or diploma program

Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)

F. Ludwig Diehn Chorus Scholarship

Description:

This scholarship was established by the F. Ludwig Diehn Fund of The Norfolk Foundation in 2006 to support students participating in the TCC Chorus. The scholarship funds should be applied to tuition, fees, books, and supplies.

Criteria:  

• Students must enroll in any Associate’s degree program at TCC
• Students must register for & participate in MUS 137/237 – Chorus
• Students must have and maintain an overall 2.5 academic GPA and a 3.0 GPA in

  MUS 137/237
• Student must audition for the director of the TCC chorus

• Students must assist in recruiting other students for the TCC chorus

Genevieve Greer Memorial Scholarship for Returning Women Students

Description:

This scholarship was established by TCC Professor Mark Greer in 2007 in honor and in memory of his mother, Genevieve Greer.  This endowed scholarship is meant to support female students who are pursuing higher education for the first time at a later point in life or who are returning to school after a break.  Funds should be used for tuition, fees, books, and other expenses associated with pursuing a degree at Tidewater Community College.

Criteria:

• Student must be a female who is 25 years of age or older

• Student can be a full-time or part-time student carrying at least 9 credit hours

• Student must have not yet met the cost of attendance for the year

• Student must submit a short essay describing why she is returning to school and how this scholarship would help her succeed in her educational pursuits

George B. Pass Memorial Scholarship

Description:

George B. Pass, President of TCC for almost 25 years, was admired and respected for his outstanding ability to engage both elected and appointed state officials in the needs of the college. It was during Dr. Pass’s tenure that TCC grew from 1,000 to 20,000 students, and from a single campus to three campuses plus the Norfolk Skills Center. This scholarship is intended to provide financial assistance to students involved in community service. The scholarship will be awarded to one student each year and is applicable to tuition only.

Criteria:

• Continuing student (24 credit hours completed)
• GPA of 3.5 or higher

• Full-time or part-time student
• Enrolled in a degree, diploma, or certificate program
• Demonstrated evidence of a wide array of community service and/or civic achievement

Hisayuki Yamaie Scholarship

Description:

This scholarship was established by former TCC student Hisayuki Yamaie from the proceeds of his art work. The scholarship is intended to support students studying art at the TCC Visual Arts Center and who are children of members of the fire, emergency medical, or police services or of the U.S. military.

Criteria:

• Full-time student in good standing in one of the programs offered by the TCC Visual Arts Center.
• Son or daughter of a member of the fire, emergency medical, or police services or the United States military services.
• Outstanding portfolio as determined by the Director of the Visual Arts Center.

Honors Program Scholarship

Description:

This scholarship recognizes one student annually who is committed to the pursuit of academic excellence. The scholarship funds should be applied to tuition and fees.

Criteria:

• Minimum GPA of 3.0
• Enrolled in a program of study
• Continuing student with at least 24 credits completed

HSBC Scholar Award

Description:

This scholarship was established in 2006 by HSBC - North America to recognize a young student at each campus who has achieved academic excellence.

Criteria:

•  Available to full time or part time students

•  Any major is acceptable: student must include a typewritten paragraph with the application detailing his/her career goals

•  Minimum GPA of 2.8

•  New or continuing student

•  Enrolled in a degree or certificate program

•  Student must be 25 years of age or younger

Kevin A. and Linnie S. Carter Scholarship

Description:

Kevin and Linnie Carter are natives of Norfolk and established this scholarship in 2007 to demonstrate their love for their hometown and education. They attended Norfolk Public Schools and graduated from Maury High School. Scholarship funds should be applied to tuition, fees, and books.

Criteria:

Full-time or part-time student
• Minimum GPA of 2.0

Student must reside in Lambert's Point, Park Place or Colonial Place in Norfolk,

   Virginia.

Mary Ferrell Flickinger Scholarship

Description:

This scholarship was established by a gift from the estate of Mrs. Mary Flickinger. It was her desire to provide aid to TCC students to pay for their education. Funds should be applied to tuition, fees, and books.

Criteria:

• Available to full time or part time students

The applicant must have completed 6 credits

The applicant must be enrolled in degree or certificate program

The applicant must have a minimum GPA of 2.5

Midwife Scholarship

Description:

This scholarship was established in 2010 by the Midwife Organization (Mentor Inspire Develop Women to Implement and Fulfill the Extraordinary) to support single, female, African-American students who are enrolled in TCC’s Early Childhood Development and/or Nursing programs.  The funds can be used for tuition, fees, and books.

Criteria:

• Student must be enrolled in the Early Childhood Development or Nursing programs at Tidewater Community College.

• Student can be a full-time or part-time student.

• Student must have not yet met the cost of attendance for the year.

• Student must be a single, African-American female.

• Student must have a minimum grade point average of 3.0.

SD's Graduate Scholarship (Students Serving Persons with Developmental Disabilities)

Description:

The Students Serving Persons with Developmental Disabilities Scholarship was established by the SD Club to support deserving graduates of TCC's Special Education Program who are interested in pursuing a degree in Special Education or a related field at a four year institution.

Criteria:

• Active member of the Students Serving Persons with Developmental Disabilities (SD) Club
• Graduate of TCC's Special Education Program with interest in pursuing Special Education or a related field at a four-year institution
• Semester GPA of 3.0 or higher
• Full-time or part-time (minimum 6 credits)
• Renewable with a semester 2.5 GPA

General Assumptions:

• Full-time (12 credits+) $1000 year/$500 per semester
• Part-time (6 – 11 credits) $500 year/$250 per semester
• Funds to be used for tuition, fees, books and related expenses
• If student completely withdraws from all classes remaining funds are to be returned to the SD Club Account.

Application Materials:

• Students will complete the TCC Scholarship Application and submit the form to the Chesapeake Campus Financial Aid Office.  
• 300 word essay describing your interest in Special Education or related field
• Application Packets will be forwarded to Dr. Jerry Mayhew, Department Chair for review and selection.

SD's Scholarship (Students Serving Persons with Developmental Disabilities)

Description:

The Students Serving Persons with Developmental Disabilities Scholarship was established by the SD Club to support deserving students interested in Special Education or a related field.

Criteria:

• Active member of the Students Serving Persons with Developmental Disabilities (SD) Club
• Semester GPA of 3.0 or higher
• Full-time or part-time (minimum 6 credits)
• Renewable with a semester 2.5 GPA

Short Term Study Abroad Scholarships for Non-Language Trips

Description:

Each year the Student Opportunities Subcommittee of the International Education Committee awards partial scholarships to deserving students to study abroad. These scholarships will only defray the cost of the program, and students will need to contribute to the cost of their study abroad experience.

Tech Prep Scholarship

Description:

Eight (8) $500 Scholarships for two (2) graduating seniors from each of the following cities: Chesapeake , Norfolk , Portsmouth , and Virginia Beach to attend ANY Tidewater Community College campus.  

Criteria:

Students should be pursuing an AAS Degree at TCC and should have taken some Career and Technical Education courses in high school.

Students should be registered as a full-time student at a TCC campus in the fall of 2005, with scholarship money available in early 2006.

Minimum 2.5 overall GPA.

Visual Arts Center Academic Scholarship

Description:

VAC scholarships are awarded to current and incoming VAC students who are enrolled in one of our degree programs.

Criteria:

Awards are based on a review of a six piece portfolio judged by a committee of VAC full time faculty. This judging usually takes place in June. Scholarship recipients must take at least six credit hours in the fall and spring semesters.

TCC Scholarship Application

Willcox & Savage Leadership Scholarship

Description:

This scholarship was established to honor the lawyers and staff of Willcox & Savage for their long and outstanding support of civic endeavors in the Tidewater community.

Criteria:

• Student can be from any TCC campus with preference for a student from Norfolk or Virginia Beach
• GPA of 3.0 or higher
• Recipient should write a note of thanks to Willcox & Savage Law Firm

William E. Wood Scholarship

Description:

Named for William E. Wood, founder of William E. Wood & Associates (realty company), this scholarship is intended to support a student pursuing a degree in business. The scholarship funds should be applied to tuition and fees.

Criteria:

• full-time student (minimum 12 credit hours per semester)
• continuing student (24 credit hours completed)
• enrolled in an A.S. degree program for business
• GPA of 3.0 or higher
