TCC’s leaders are strong believers in the development
of the college’s faculty and staff through education
and experience. Every spring before the fiscal year ends,
Dr. DiCroce and the Executive Staff renew their commitment
to TCC’s workforce by earmarking part of the college’s
budget for the upcoming year to professional development
support. The State of Virginia encourages development of
its employees. Though the state’s budget is not expansive
enough to finance all development requests of
its employees, Virginia strongly encourages state agencies,
like Virginia colleges, to include in their annual budgets
funding to alleviate in part the financial burdens of professional
development. Even in the face of budget constraints, the
administration of TCC continues to exhibit faith in its
workforce by refusing to spend that professional development
money on other needs.
In order to provide financial support for the professional
development of TCC’s faculty and staff, the President
and Executive Staff set aside money from the college’s
operating budget. As funds are distributed for conferences,
course tuition, memberships and such, records are kept to
determine whether or not the money set aside is sufficient
to answer the needs for the year. Money remaining at the end of
the year is returned to the operating budget to be used
in meeting other college needs.
In Spring 2000, Dr. DiCroce charged the Classified Association with the task of developing a plan to coordinate college support for professional development of classified staff. A plan was written stipulating provisions for tuition assistance, financial support for individual choices in professional development, cost-free opportunities, and the establishment of the Classified Professional Development Fund, an account administered by the classified to award additional funding to classified employees in need of further support. The Classified Professional Development Plan was submitted to the President and Executive Staff and adopted effective July 1, 2001.
