TCC among top 10 Digital Community Colleges

Tidewater Community College was named to the top 10 list on e.Republic’s Center for Digital Education’s ninth annual Digital Community Colleges Survey. A total of 44 institutions of higher learning were named to the top ten lists in three separate categories, based on student enrollments.

TCC received the recognition for innovative use of technology to achieve first-rate student learning environments. It has consistently finished in the top 10 since 2008.

President Edna Baehre-Kolovani and Vice President for Information Systems Robin Ying accepted the TCC award during the annual conference for American Association of Community Colleges on April 6.

“In today’s tech-savvy world, we are proud to offer technology that enhances learning for our students,” Baehre-Kolovani said. “And while we are pleased by our six year track record of receiving this recognition, we continue to focus on advancements to support students, faculty and staff.”

Survey questions and criteria examined and scored areas of digital and emerging technologies, such as use of mobile devices and technology integration into curriculum; strategic planning and data management; and professional development, including availability of technology tools and training for faculty and students.

In addition, colleges were surveyed on their technology priorities, infrastructure and networks, collaboration and outreach efforts and use of technology innovations.

“Community colleges across the country are employing technology in exciting ways to develop unique learning environments on campus and to expand online learning opportunities 24/7,” said Alan Cox, senior vice president for the Center for Digital Education. “Many of the colleges honored this year have employed various technologies and social media to improve resources to further instructional goals.”

Ten other colleges within the Virginia Community College System were recognized with this award.
