TCC celebrates Black History Month 2015

Tidewater Community College celebrates Black History Month 2015 under the national theme, “A Century of Black Life, History and Culture.”

The celebration includes a wide assortment of free, public activities throughout February with discussions and entertainment at each of TCC’s campuses in Chesapeake, Norfolk, Portsmouth and Virginia Beach.

All activities listed, except those noted, are open to the public.

College-wide

Feb. 5: Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Recognition Program
5:30 – 7:30 p.m., Joint-Use Library, 2nd Floor, Virginia Beach Campus
The college marks the birth of Martin Luther King Jr. by recognizing three honorees, including a community leader, a college leader and a student scholar. The event features the TCC Jazz Ensemble, multi-media presentations and student works of art.

Feb. 11: KEYNOTE Michael Tubbs
Noon, Portsmouth Campus Student Center, Multipurpose room
Michael Tubbs is back by popular demand after his appearance during TCC’s 2014 Black History Month observance. In 2012, Tubbs, at 22, was elected the youngest member of the Stockton (Calif.) City Council. His political campaign, “Reinvent Stockton,” caught the attention of Oprah Winfrey, who donated $10,000. The documentary “True Son,” which follows the Stockton native through several months of campaigning and ultimate victory, debuted at the 2014 Tribeca Film Festival. The son of a teenage mother and an incarcerated father, Tubbs has defied bleak odds as a young, black male in a troubled community.

Feb. 15: “In the Heat of the Night” film
3 p.m., TCC Roper Performing Arts Center
The Roper Center will present the Academy Award-winning film “In the Heat of the Night” followed by a panel discussion, “From the Film to Ferguson: 50 Years Later.” “In the Heat of the Night,” based on John Ball’s 1965 novel, takes place in America during the 1960s as the country grappled with integration and an evolving acceptance of the Civil Rights Movement. The novel and film crossed fraught political lines, marking one of the first times in a motion picture an African American man reacted to – rather than accepted – provocation from a white man. The film won five Academy Awards and spawned a hugely popular television series.

Feb. 20: “In the Heat of the Night” play
8 p.m., TCC Roper Performing Arts Center
L.A. Theatre Works, the nation’s premier radio theater company, presents its riveting stage adaptation by Matt Pelfrey for a single performance. Presented in the format of a live radio play, the production includes costumes, minimal sets and sound effects. Described as an “intimate, spontaneous experience,” the play includes adult language, and parental discretion is advised.

Step Show
6 p.m., Portsmouth Campus Student Center, Gym
Enjoy a step show featuring steppers from sororities and fraternities from local colleges and universities. The roots of stepping trace back to the mid-1900s with fraternity and sorority members competing in song and dance rituals.

Movie Series – “School Daze”

“School Daze” portrays the life of a not-so-popular young man who wants to pledge a popular fraternity at his historically black college. Students will learn about the sociopolitical and interracial issues surrounding historically black Greek organizations during the late 1980s. (Open to TCC students, faculty and staff with valid ID.)

The sound of freedom rings in this presentation of music and stories of Africans from the Dismal Swamp and beyond.

This uplifting drama looks at the effects of interracial marriage in the 1960s. The main characters are friends since childhood and loved by both families. The couple is exiled after their wedding and wages a courageous battle to find a place in America. Based on the true story of Mildred and Richard Loving, an interracial couple sentenced to prison in Virginia for marrying in 1967. The Supreme Court decision in Loving v. Virginia ended all race-based marriage restrictions in the U.S. (Open to TCC students, faculty and staff with valid ID.)
