TCC’s Academy for Nonprofit Excellence earns renewal grant

Tidewater Community College’s Academy for Nonprofit Excellence will continue to be a valuable resource for nonprofit professionals, thanks to renewal of a Hampton Roads Community Foundation grant.

The Foundation has supported the Academy since 2004.

The Foundation awarded $146,200 to TCC that will allow the Academy to continue to meet the professional development and training needs of staff, board members and volunteers in the nonprofit sector.

Offerings include:

Half- and one-day courses on topics relevant to nonprofit and business professionals;
Affordable prices, including discounts for nonprofits
Classes taught by expert, experienced instructors
The opportunity to earn a Certificate in Nonprofit Management

“We could not continue the mission of the Academy without the generous support of the Hampton Roads Community Foundation,” said Lisa Peterson, program coordinator of the Academy.

“Our work continues to address growing, developing, training and educating nonprofit professionals in such a way that they run effective organizations.”

The Academy frequently offers classes that benefit both nonprofit and businesses seeking to keep their knowledge and skills up-to-date given changes in technology and workplace laws.

Two distinct webinars on July 20 and 27 will address new overtime laws and diversity concerns that will affect employers beginning Dec. 1. Michael Steele of Williams Mullen will lead both webinars from 9 to 11:30 a.m. Nonprofits and businesses can register here.

The Academy’s annual welcome breakfast, the 757Nonprofit Collaboration, to recognize local nonprofit professionals who have moved into leadership positions in the last year will be Aug. 16.

In addition, the Academy will offer a one-day course on Sept. 22 on best practices in building a highly effective governing board.

A one-day class on Sept. 29 will focus on creating an effective employee orientation program and engagement strategy.

More than 1,300 nonprofit professionals affiliated with over 600 nonprofits have taken Academy classes. Last spring the Academy graduated its 113th student, who earned a Certificate of Nonprofit Management.

The certificate requires a student earn 10 Continuing Education Units with five of those coming from each of the Academy’s five core areas ranging from human resources to finance to risk management.
