Beazley Foundation honored with 2013 Chancellor’s Award for support of TCC

The Beazley Foundation, Inc., which has contributed more than $1.6 million to Tidewater Community College since 2005, has earned the 2013 Chancellor’s Award for Leadership in Philanthropy. The foundation was nominated by Tidewater Community College. The award was given at a luncheon ceremony at the Country Club of Virginia on April 16.

The Beazley Foundation’s contributions to TCC have included establishing the Beazley Nursing Scholarship at the Fred W. Beazley Portsmouth Campus.

The Chancellor’s Award for Leadership in Philanthropy luncheon is hosted by the Virginia Foundation for Community College Education to honor the leading philanthropists from each of Virginia’s 23 community colleges as well as the statewide foundation. This marks the eighth year the awards have been given.

This year’s class of distinguished philanthropy leaders contributed a combined total of more than $17 million dollars to Virginia’s community colleges.

“The generosity of the two dozen philanthropy leaders we honor represents a brilliant collection of individuals, foundations and employers who believe in the sheer beauty of transformation,” VCCS Chancellor Glenn DuBois said. “They believe in the knowledge and skills that Virginia’s community colleges offer to every Virginian. We thank them deeply for the partnerships that demonstrate the brilliance of philanthropy.”

The honorees will have a scholarship named after them that will be awarded next fall to a student attending their community college.

Beazley Foundation, Inc., was established in December 1948 with funds provided by the late Fred W. Beazley; his wife, Marie C. Beazley; and son, Fred W. Beazley Jr., all of Portsmouth. In February 1956, Fred W. Beazley formed the Foundation Boys Academy to operate Frederick Military Academy and later Frederick College. The college was gifted to the Commonwealth of Virginia in 1968 to become a part of Virginia’s Community Colleges.

The academy closed in 1985. The Charter of Foundation Boys Academy later became Frederick Foundation and embraced an expanded mission. In 1993, Frederick Foundation merged into the present Beazley Foundation. The foundation awards grants to an array of organizations and programs serving southeastern Virginia.

The foundation has been led since 2002 by Portsmouth native Richard S. Bray, a retired judge for the Court of Appeals of Virginia.
