Annual Festival of Jewish Film includes special student show

The Simon Family Jewish Community Center’s 23rd Annual Festival of Jewish Film from Jan. 16-24 will include four screenings at Tidewater Community College’s Roper Performing Arts Center.

TCC students can show their ID cards for free admission to the Roper screenings.

The films include a special free showing of “Arranged” on Jan. 21 at 12:30 p.m. The film captures the evolving friendship of two young women – one an Orthodox Jew, the other a Muslim — who become teachers at a public high school in Brooklyn and learn they have some things in common, including the prospect of arranged marriages.

Presented by TCC’s Office for Intercultural Learning, “Arranged” is free and open to the public.

“We are proud of our partnership with the Simon Family Jewish Community Center and appreciate the opportunity to be part of this festival that provides students with a glimpse into different cultures and families,” said Jeanne Natali, director of the Office for Intercultural Learning.

The Roper Center will also show:

“The Eichmann Show,” with Martin Freeman and Anthony LaPaglia, Jan. 17 at 2 p.m.;
“Closer to the Moon,” with Vera Farmiga, Jan. 23 at 7 p.m.;
“Avalon,” with Aidan Quinn and Elizabeth Perkins, Jan. 24 at 5:30 p.m.

“Avalon” will be introduced by longtime Virginian-Pilot culture writer Mal Vincent, and a reception will be catered by TCC Culinary Arts students.

TCC students receive free admission to all films by showing their student ID card.
