Ceramics collaboration to be held at TCC’s Visual Arts Center

The exhibition “From the Ground Up: A Ceramics Invitational” will open at Tidewater Community College’s Visual Arts Center on Sept. 18.

The opening reception will be Sept. 17 at 7 p.m. Ceramist Stephen Marder, owner of Orzo Studio in Portsmouth, will give an informal gallery talk preceding the reception at 6:30 p.m.

Events are free and open to the public. The exhibition continues until Nov. 5.

In this collaborative exhibition program with the Portsmouth Art and Cultural Center’s, “Virginia Earth: Ceramic Art,” the VAC presents bodies of work by four potters:

Dianne Hottenstein of Chesapeake, who teaches ceramics classes at TCC, presents sculptures that relate the content and symbolism inspired by her everyday life, ongoing research and literary classics.
Vessels by the late Lawrence Jordan include small to large-scale pieces that reveal striking proportion, glazes and texture.
Ani Kasten, from Mount Rainier, Md., creates vessels, sculptures and assemblages that merge natural and man-made worlds.
African figural works by Woodrow Nash of Akron, Ohio, expressively transmit human delicacies and inner harmony of masculine and feminine forms.
