Cyber Security Awareness

In today’s digital age, cyber security is more important than ever. At Tidewater Community College we are committed to equipping our students and faculty with the knowledge and tools needed to protect personal and institutional data. Here are some key practices to enhance your cyber security awareness:

  • Regular Software Updates: Stress the importance of keeping software up to date to ensure the latest security patches are applied, protecting against vulnerabilities.
  • Protect Your Devices: Use antivirus software, firewalls, and encryption to safeguard your devices from malware and unauthorized access. Lock your devices when not in use and never leave them unattended in public places. Avoid using public Wi-Fi networks or shared computers for accessing confidential or academic information.
  • Use Strong Passwords: Emphasize the importance of creating strong, unique passwords that include a mix of uppercase and lowercase letters, numbers, and symbols. Password managers can be recommended as tools to help manage these securely.
  • Enable Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA): Highlight the need for more than just passwords to secure online accounts. Enabling MFA significantly reduces the risk of unauthorized access.
  • Educate Yourself: Stay informed about the latest cyber security threats and best practices by visiting TCC’s Cyber Security Center virtual site regularly. You can also take advantage of the online training and resources offered by the college to enhance your cyber security awareness and skills.
  • Be Aware of Phishing Scams: Be cautious of emails or messages from unknown sources asking for personal information. If something seems suspicious, do not click on links or download attachments.
  • Report Suspicious Activity: If you notice any unusual activity on your accounts or devices, report it immediately to the Office of Information Systems (OIS) department.
  • Faculty and Staff: Review TCC Spam, Phishing, and Email Abuse here via Inside TCC.
