Provocative TEDMED conference to be streamed at TCC

Let’s turn what we think we know about health on its head. Let’s acknowledge that, the more we learn about medicine, the more we realize we don’t know. Expect the unexpected when TEDMED 2014, “Unlocking the Imagination,” convenes Sept. 10-12 in Washington, D.C., and San Francisco. Can’t attend? Tidewater Community College is your ticket.

TEDMED is an annual global conference of leading doers and thinkers from every walk of life. Its aim is to seed innovations in health and medicine, making possible tomorrow’s breakthroughs.

For the third year, TCC’s Virginia Beach Campus will host a live-stream of the conference in the Advanced Technology Center. The viewings are free and open to the public, and members of the medical community are especially welcome.

Dianne Stanbach, who teaches English and humanities at TCC, has arranged for the college to show TEDMED all three years. “It’s like a TED Talk but with more zip,” she said. “The topics are directly related to much of TCC’s curriculum in health professions, engineering, science, business and even the arts.”

It will also be viewable on-demand using login information that will be available at the start of the broadcast each day.

Though businesses pay tens of thousands of dollars to stream TEDMED, educational institutions are able to do it for free. TCC is among many participating institutions, including Johns Hopkins University, the University of Virginia, Tufts University, University of Pennsylvania and Duke University.
