TCC celebrates Black History Month 2017

Walter Kimbrough, the high-profile and dynamic president of Dillard University, is the keynote speaker for Tidewater Community College’s celebration of Black History Month.

Kimbrough will speak on Feb. 21 at 12:30 p.m. on the fifth floor of TCC’s Norfolk Campus Student Center. The event is free and open to the public.

Kimbrough was previously director of student activities and leadership at Old Dominion University. In addition to ODU, he has worked at Emory University, Georgia State University and Albany State University, where he became the vice president for student affairs.

He earned degrees from the University of Georgia, Miami University in Ohio and Georgia State University.

Kimbrough has been recognized for his research and writings on historically black colleges and universities and African American men in college.

In 2010, he made the Ebony Magazine Power 100 list of the doers and influencers in the African American community, joining the likes of former President Obama, Michelle Obama, Jay-Z, Richard Parsons, Tyler Perry, Debra Lee and Tom Joyner.

The Atlanta native is known for engaging students on social media. He was cited in 2010 by BachelorsDegree.com as one of 25 college presidents to follow on Twitter (@HipHopPrez).

Dillard, located in New Orleans, is a historically black college whose roots go back to the mid-19th century.

The national theme for Black History Month is “The Crisis in Black Education,” which focuses on the crucial role of education in the history of African Americans.

The celebration includes a wide assortment of free, public activities throughout February with speakers, discussions and entertainment at each of TCC’s campuses in Chesapeake, Norfolk, Portsmouth and Virginia Beach.

Another highlight of TCC’s Black History Month will be the 2017 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Recognition Program on Feb. 23 at 5:30 p.m. in the Norfolk Campus Student Center.

Hosted annually by TCC and its Intercultural Learning Center, this event recognizes members of the TCC student body, faculty and Hampton Roads community whose passion for service and justice reflects that of Dr. King. View this year’s recipients and RSVP at www.tcc.edu/mlk.
