TCC’s Diagnostic Medical Sonography program wins re-accreditation

The recent accreditation means graduates of the TCC program can continue to take the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography examination, a benchmark for employers. TCC boasts an 100 percent pass rate for the exam in the last three years.

“When you hire one of our graduates, you know they have gone through a program that has met the highest educational standards,” said Indu Sharma, program head for Diagnostic Medical Sonography at TCC. “Receiving continuing accreditation reinforces our commitment to student success, allowing us to provide the health care community with competent employees.”

TCC’s Diagnostic Medical Sonography program is one of four accredited programs in the state of Virginia and one of 125 nationally accredited associate degree programs. Students learn in the Regional Health Professions Center on the Virginia Beach Campus, which houses a state-of-the-art laboratory with eight ultrasound machines.

In addition to course work, students complete clinical rotations in local health care systems, where they receive hands-on instruction under the supervision of qualified staff.

Sonography students also work with Eastern Virginia Medical School, mentoring first-year medical students on ultrasound technique.

CAAHEP, the largest programmatic accreditor in the health sciences field, accredits more than 2,100 education programs in 28 health science professions.

The recent peer review conducted by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography and CAAHEP’s board of directors recognizes the program’s compliance with nationally established accreditation standards.

TCC’s accreditation in Diagnostic Medical Sonography dates back to 1992.
